The Stack Underneath
Hello, we are BRILLIAN’S. Trying to make an effort to put the right people for you to get the best results. Just insight !
We are living in the era of ecommerce mobile apps. Want to buy clothes? Open Myntra. Need household essentials? Amazon has you covered. Craving food? A few taps on Uber Eats or DoorDash, and it’s at your doorstep.
Mobile apps have changed how we shop. They have made shopping more convenient and for millions of people, have become their go-to way for browsing, comparing, and purchasing products. If we talk about statistics, then the global mobile ecommerce market was worth $2.2 trillion in 2023. Analysts at Statista expect it to reach another $3.4 trillion in 2027. That is a massive leap of another trillion dollars in just 4 years.
The pandemic has made some lasting changes in the world of ecommerce and in the psyche of customers which made online shopping a global trend. Currently, there are around more than 2 billion people who are shopping online. That is one-quarter of the population engaging in online shopping.
If you are developing an ecommerce mobile application or are considering enhancing an existing one, then this guide will help you. A mobile application has certain features that make it efficient and successful. As a leading mobile app development company, we have completed over a hundred app projects. In this guide, we cover everything your ecommerce mobile app needs, from features to costs. Let’s get started.
Choosing to create an app for your ecommerce store can feel risky. However, right now, there are more than ever potential buyers in the market. Around 90% of shoppers believe that they can find better deals online than in-store. Why? Because apps offer faster, smoother, and more personalized experiences.
Here’s why you should invest in ecommerce mobile app:
Higher Conversions – Mobile apps have conversion rates three times higher than mobile websites. Faster checkout, saved payment details, and a better user experience make all the difference.
Stronger Customer Loyalty – Apps keep your brand just one tap away. With push notifications, personalized offers, and rewards programs, customers are more likely to return.
Better Performance – Unlike websites, apps don’t rely on browsers. They load faster, work offline for browsing, and provide a smoother shopping experience.
More Engagement & Sales – Features like push notifications and in-app messages keep customers engaged, leading to repeat purchases and higher average order values.
Competitive Advantage – Many businesses still rely only on websites. A well-optimized ecommerce mobile app sets you apart and gives customers a reason to choose you over competitors.
Your main goal for developing an app isn't just to sell product. It's about making shopping easy, engaging, and hassle-free. The right features can improve user experience, boost sales, and keep customers coming back.
Let’s start with the first essential feature.
The importance of UI/UX is immeasurable for a mobile app, especially in an app where users consistently need to navigate from one place to another. If users struggle to find products or navigate through different sections, they’ll leave and shop elsewhere. Your app should have a clean and intuitive layout that makes browsing effortless.
A few things to focus on:
Simple, clear categories – Users should be able to find products without clicking through endless menus.
Smart search bar – Adding filters, auto-suggestions, and voice search can make finding products faster.
Easy access to the cart and profile – Users shouldn’t have to hunt for their cart or account details.
A smooth navigation experience means fewer abandoned carts and more completed purchases. Now, let’s move on to the next important feature.
A clear login or registration screen will go a long way for an ecommerce app. Take a look at this example of the Shopify login screen. Nobody likes filling out long forms just to shop. If the sign-up process is complicated, users might leave before even exploring your app. A smooth and hassle-free registration process is key to keeping them engaged.
Here’s what works best:
Social media and Google login – Let users sign up with one tap using their existing accounts.
Phone number login with OTP – A quick and secure way to verify users without passwords.
Guest checkout option – Some shoppers just want to make a purchase without creating an account. Give them that flexibility.
A fast and easy login process removes friction, making it more likely that users will complete their purchases.
A shopping experience becomes great when you find the right product at the right time. Nobody likes endless scrolling to try to find a perfect product. Different people have different tastes. So, an advanced search and smart filter will help them screen down the particular features they want, the color of their choice, and which fits their budget.
What makes a search feature effective?
Auto-suggestions – Helps users find products even if they make a typo or aren’t sure of the exact name.
Voice search – A hands-free way for users to search, making shopping even more convenient.
Smart filters – Let users narrow down results by category, price, ratings, brand, and more.
Recently viewed & saved searches – Helps users pick up where they left off without searching again.
The easier it is for users to find what they want, the higher the chances they’ll make a purchase.
When it’s time to check out, the last thing you want is users abandoning their carts because their preferred payment method isn’t available. Offering multiple, secure payment options makes the buying process smooth and hassle-free.
Here’s what your ecommerce mobile app should include:
Credit/debit cards & digital wallets – Support major cards and popular wallets like PayPal and Apple Pay.
Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) options – Services like Afterpay or Klarna let customers split payments, making high-ticket items more accessible.
Net banking – Essential for regions where these are popular payment methods.
Cash on Delivery (COD) – Still a preferred option for many shoppers, especially in emerging markets.
Security is just as important. Ensure all transactions are encrypted and comply with PCI DSS standards to protect customer data.
A seamless and secure checkout experience means fewer drop-offs and more completed purchases.
Shoppers love feeling like the app understands them. A personalized experience makes browsing more engaging and increases the chances of repeat purchases.
Here’s how your app can deliver a tailored experience:
Personalized product recommendations – Show users items based on their browsing history, past purchases, and preferences.
Dynamic homepage – Display relevant deals, trending products, or category suggestions based on user behavior.
Wishlists and saved carts – Let users save products to buy later, reducing abandoned carts.
Location-based offers – Show discounts or delivery estimates based on the user’s location.
Personalization makes shopping feel effortless, encouraging users to return and buy more.
Notifications are sometimes a life-saver for users. A well-timed notification can bring users back to your app and remind them of deals they don’t want to miss. But there’s a fine line between helpful and annoying. The key here is sending relevant, personalized notifications that add value.
Here’s how to do it right:
Cart abandonment reminders – A gentle nudge to complete a purchase they left behind.
Exclusive deals and discounts – Send personalized offers based on browsing history.
Back-in-stock & price drop alerts – Keep users updated on items they’re interested in.
Order updates – Real-time notifications on order confirmation, shipping, and delivery.
Push notifications help keep your app top of mind, driving more sales and engagement.
Once a customer places an order, they want to know exactly when it will arrive. Real-time tracking keeps them informed and reduces unnecessary support inquiries.
Here’s what makes order tracking effective:
Live tracking with ETA – Show real-time updates on where the package is and when it will be delivered.
Order status updates – Notify users when their order is confirmed, shipped, out for delivery, and delivered.
Delivery partner details – Providing the name and contact details of the delivery person adds convenience and trust.
A transparent tracking system builds confidence, reducing frustration and improving the overall shopping experience.
Last but not least are chatbots. AI is thriving right now, changing everything from the development process to user experience. AI has become smarter and is now much more capable of providing users with a personalized experience and product recommendations. However, this chat support is not limited to recommendations. Users can inquire about almost anything, including policies, payment methods, stock availability, and much more. Take a look at this example.
When I typed the term "Books," the AI chatbot immediately came to my aid to help me find the specific book I am looking for. This way, users getthe benefits of:
Live chat support
Product or Policy related inquiries
24/7 availability
Personalised recommendations
E-commerce app development varies in cost depending on various factors. Developing an app is an investment, but how much does app development really cost? Costs can vary depending on the features you select, the platforms you wish to launch your app on, and the team you hire. The cost of developing your ecommerce app will vary depending on whether you're creating a basic app. However, if you want to incorporate advanced features like AI recommendations, the cost will increase accordingly.
Here’s a breakdown of the key cost factors:
App complexity – A basic app costs less, while advanced features like AI recommendations or AR shopping increase the price.

Costs and features are settled. Now the question is, which approach will you choose to develop your app? Which tech stack will you select? And on which platform will you deploy it? The approach you choose affects cost, performance, scalability, and the overall user experience. Let’s break down the three main options.
A native app is built specifically for either iOS or Android using platform-specific technologies (Swift for iOS, Kotlin for Android).
Pros:
Best performance and speed
Smooth and responsive UI
Access to all device features
Cons:
Higher development cost
Separate codebases for iOS and Android increase maintenance efforts
A cross-platform app is built using frameworks like React Native or Flutter, allowing a single codebase for both iOS and Android.
Pros:
Faster development and lower cost
Single codebase for both platforms
Easier maintenance
Cons:
Slightly lower performance than native apps
Some platform-specific limitations
Your tech stack plays a crucial role in your mobile app development journey. It affects performance, scalability, and security. Here’s a breakdown of key technologies for different parts of the app:
Frontend: Swift (iOS), Kotlin (Android), React Native, Flutter
Backend: Node.js, Django, Ruby on Rails, Laravel
Database: MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Firebase
Payment Integration: Stripe, PayPal, Razorpay
Cloud Services: AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure
Choosing the right tech stack depends on your project’s complexity, scalability needs, and budget. A well-optimized stack ensures smooth performance and long-term growth.
Let’s look at the some of the best practices that can help you make your ecommerce app successful.
The success of an ecommerce app depends on how easy it is for users to browse, search, and complete purchases. If customers struggle with navigation, slow load times, or cluttered interfaces, they are likely to abandon the app. A clean layout, intuitive navigation, and a well-organized product catalog can enhance usability. Every action within the app should feel effortless, from adding items to the cart to completing the checkout process in just a few taps.
Speed is crucial. If an app takes too long to load or lags while switching between pages, users will leave. High-resolution images, unoptimized code, and excessive animations can degrade performance. To address this, consider compressing images, using caching techniques, and leveraging a strong backend infrastructure to help maintain fast response times. Additionally, you can utilize mobile app testing tools to identify roadblocks that could harm your apps in the long run.
Mobile app security is crucial, especially as cyber threats continue to rise. Where sensitive data is involved, security is essential. Online shoppers expect their personal and financial information to be safeguarded. Implement encryption, two-factor authentication, and secure payment gateways. Ensure your mobile app aligns with all regulations and laws set by the government. Compliance with industry standards like PCI DSS also helps build trust.
Personalization has become a trend. AI has made personalization all the more easy. An AI-driven recommendation engine analyzes browsing behavior and past purchases to suggest relevant productions. For example if a customer frequently buys athletic wear, the app can highlight new arrivals or exclusive discounts on sportswear.
Flexibility in payment is important to enhance conversion rates. Some customers use credit or debit cards, while others use digital wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, or PayPal. Most consumers also seek buy-now-pay-later alternatives. Limiting payment options can result in cart abandonment. Offering multiple payment options ensures that all customers can make their purchase in the manner most convenient for them.
Targeted push notifications drive engagement and bring users back to the app. Excessive unimportant alerts can annoy users, leading them to disable notifications or delete the app. Notifications should be personalized and timely—like price drops on wishlist items, exclusive discounts, or reminders about abandoned carts—rather than overwhelming users. Thoughtfully crafted push notifications can significantly enhance sales and retention.
A common mistake businesses make is focusing only on their current needs instead of planning for growth. As the customer base expands, the app should be able to handle higher traffic, more transactions, and additional features without performance issues. A cloud-based backend, modular architecture, and efficient database management help ensure that the app remains smooth and responsive, even as demand increases.
How do you make your ecommerce mobile app profitable? While direct sales are the primary source of revenue, there are several other strategies to monetize an app. A well-planned strategy can help businesses generate revenue while enhancing user experience.
If your app is a marketplace where third-party vendors list items, a commission-based model is one of the best methods to monetize. Amazon and eBay charge a percentage on every sale that occurs through their platform.
Revenue is generated by taking a percentage of each sale.
Works well for marketplace-based apps with multiple sellers.
Commission rates can vary based on product categories and services.
Offering a subscription plan provides a steady stream of recurring revenue. Businesses can introduce exclusive perks such as early access to sales, free shipping, or special discounts for paid members.
Encourages customer loyalty through exclusive perks.
Generates consistent revenue with monthly or annual fees.
Example: Amazon Prime offers faster shipping and special discounts.
Ads can be a significant revenue source if they are integrated without disrupting the user experience. Businesses can leverage various ad formats, such as banner ads, native ads, and video ads.
Personalized ads improve engagement and effectiveness.
Excessive advertising can negatively impact user experience.
Best for ecommerce apps with high daily active users.
A freemium approach allows users to access the core app for free while offering premium features for a fee.
The free version provides essential shopping features.
Premium features include AI recommendations, advanced search, and exclusive deals.
Helps convert engaged users into paying customers.
