Once your application is developed and launched, the next important step is maintenance. This stage is all about keeping your app running smoothly and making sure it stays up-to-date. Maintenance includes tasks like checking how well the app is performing, updating the libraries and technologies it uses, and managing the app’s overall lifecycle. In simple terms, it’s about keeping the app healthy and useful for a long time.
When an app goes live, it’s also important to make sure it’s free of bugs and safe from security threats. That’s why many companies either handle app maintenance themselves or hire other companies to do it. Outsourcing is a popular choice because it takes the technical burden off your shoulders. These specialized companies take care of updates, fix any issues, and handle security, so you can focus on your main work, like growing your business or planning your marketing.
Outsourcing works like adding extra members to your team. These companies handle all the behind-the-scenes work, like managing your app’s data, keeping it secure, and making sure everything runs smoothly.
In this article, we’ll talk about what app maintenance is, why it’s important, and how to take care of your app, especially if it’s built with Java. We’ll start with a quick overview of app maintenance and then move on to Java applications — what they are and what it takes to maintain them. Next, we’ll discuss two main options: managing your app in-house or outsourcing the work to a Java development company. We’ll also look at the benefits of both approaches.
For example, managing the app in-house might seem easier because it’s handled by your team, but it can increase their workload. On the other hand, outsourcing can free up your team’s time, so they can focus on more important tasks like marketing or improving your business strategy.
By the end of this article, you’ll know how to keep your app running well, how to ensure its long-term performance, and what makes app maintenance so important for businesses.
Application maintenance isn’t just about fixing bugs or patching issues. Many businesses working with application development companies assume that maintenance is only about repairs. While fixing problems is a part of it, maintenance is much broader than that.
It includes ensuring compatibility with new technologies, keeping the application up-to-date, and addressing various external factors that can impact both performance and longevity. For example, switching to the latest Java JDK can provide better security, improved features, and several enhancements to keep the application running smoothly.
Updating the system is just one piece of the puzzle. Maintenance also involves testing and other critical processes.
Now let’s talk about Java application maintenance—what it actually involves and what needs to be done. There are some things you simply can’t avoid because they are necessary and must be addressed regularly. If we list out some of the important factors, bug fixing comes out as one of the most in-demand activities among clients. After all, no application is completely bug-free, no matter how big or well-developed it is. Bugs are unavoidable, and security patches are equally important because they address critical issues.
Java application maintenance can be broken down into different parts. Let’s understand it in simple terms.
Bugs are unavoidable. After launching your app, encountering bugs is almost certain — even the world’s top apps aren't bug-free. If you fail to address these issues, it can leave a negative impression on your users. Not only can it affect your app's performance, but crashes are also a common side effect. Regular bug fixes and updates help you enhance both user experience and performance, ensuring your app runs smoothly.
Security updates have become essential in today’s digital world, especially with the rise of cyberattacks following the advent of AI. With this rapid increase in threats, security updates should be considered a critical part of maintenance. You might even need to dedicate a team specifically for security updates.
A report by Accenture confirms this, showing that after the launch of ChatGPT, ransomware attacks and cyberattacks have increased by 76%. AI-powered phishing attacks have primarily targeted sectors like government, education, manufacturing, and healthcare. Phishing attacks, in particular, saw a staggering 1265% rise since the launch of ChatGPT.
Another key aspect is compatibility updates. These updates are important to keep your application in sync with updated operating systems and external libraries. For example, if you’re still using an older version of Java, like Java 11, which has reached its end of life, it could impact your application’s compatibility. Older versions might not work as smoothly or may cause issues with newer devices.
Besides ensuring functionality, compatibility updates also take user experience into account. They help you improve code quality and ensure that your application stays compatible with the latest systems and devices.
Performance optimization is another area that falls under the maintenance bracket. One of the key goals of maintenance is to improve the application's performance. Just because your application is launched doesn’t mean your responsibilities are done. Maintenance is an ongoing process, and through it, you can find opportunities to optimize your application.
For example, you might look for ways to make the application run faster or identify outdated Java libraries that can be replaced with newer ones. This continuous effort helps keep your application efficient and up-to-date, ensuring it performs at its best.
In this section, we'll discuss some popular Java maintenance services. If you're planning to onboard a third-party vendor or service provider, here are a few things to consider. If you're managing it in-house, don't worry – the next section will cover some important points you'll need to know.
1. Perfective Maintenance
So, the goal of perfective maintenance is all about making your app better for users. It focuses on improving functionality and overall user experience. For example, let’s say you decide to add a search filter to help users find products based on specific criteria. That’s a great way to improve the app because it makes it easier for users to search and find what they need, giving them a better overall experience.
2. Adaptive Maintenance
Adaptive maintenance is all about tweaking your app to keep up with changes happening outside of it. Let’s say you have a social media app, and you need to integrate a new authentication system to boost security. In this case, you'd update your app’s authentication process to stay aligned with the latest security standards, making sure it keeps up with those external changes.
3. Emergency Maintenance
Emergency maintenance is used for addressing critical issues or unexpected incidents that need immediate action. For example, if your e-commerce platform goes down due to a sudden traffic spike, emergency maintenance can quickly help restore services and get everything running smoothly again. In such cases, emergency maintenance ensures an uninterrupted experience and can be implemented as soon as needed.
4. Corrective maintenance
Corrective maintenance is all about fixing defects or issues that pop up when users are interacting with your application. It focuses on identifying the source of the problem and then implementing a fix. In simple terms, it’s like troubleshooting to get things back on track whenever something breaks or doesn’t work as expected.
5. Compliance maintenance
Compliance maintenance ensures that your application stays in line with required regulations. For industries like healthcare or finance, where compliance is crucial, not meeting these standards can negatively affect your app's performance and cause significant issues. This involves implementing stronger privacy protections and building a solid infrastructure to support these needs. It’s about keeping your application running efficiently while adhering to legal and industry standards.
6. Security maintenance
Security maintenance helps protect your application from potential threats. It includes applying security patches, using antivirus software, and keeping inbuilt libraries up to date. The goal is to stay proactive and ensure your app remains safe by handling these tasks regularly.
You can refer to these as best practices, or give them any name you prefer. But if you're looking to get maintenance services from a third party or handle it internally, it's essential to bring these practices into play. They're crucial for the long-term health of your application and its smooth maintenance.
Proactive maintenance is Key
There are different types of maintenance services, but one of the most important is proactive maintenance. For critical apps, especially those running 24/7, you can't afford to ignore this. Applications need to keep evolving to adapt to unexpected and expected changes. Proactive maintenance ensures your app stays ahead of potential issues before they become problems.
Regular updates and continuous improvements not only make your app better but also help you stay competitive and achieve long-term success in the market.
1. Log the progress
Visibility is a key factor when it comes to your application, whether it’s in development, maintenance, or upgrades. You need to know what’s going on behind the scenes. Setting up a system that lets you track the changes being made is crucial. This way, you can lock those changes and have a clear picture of what’s been updated. Once you have that visibility, it’ll make it much easier to plan future deployments, figure out which features need fixing, and ensure smooth updates moving forward.
2. Update regularly
Tech is always moving forward, right? Software, APIs, third-party SDKs – they're all getting regular updates to keep things fresh. It's like your app is constantly getting little upgrades, piece by piece. So, it's crucial to stay on top of all the new stuff happening, especially with Java apps – like what new features are being added and what's changing in the tech world.
Perform security audit time-to-time
Security audits and maintenance are both crucial—something you just can’t ignore. With a security audit, you get the chance to stay updated on the latest innovations and security enhancements. It’s not just about checking if things are working, but also about digging deep into aspects like your security protocols, encryptionprotocols, and backup processes. You get to see all the angles and make sure everything’s up to date and secure.
When it comes to app maintenance, you’ve quite a few options. One of the main choices is having an internal development team.
Having your own in-house team is probably the most flexible option. You get the most control and visibility over the entire process. If you're a larger organization, in-house development is pretty common. You get a great level of customization and control in the environment, and you can track everything as it happens. This visibility can be much clearer than what you’d get with an external provider, where tracking might not be as transparent. But, one downside is the speed—you might not always get things done as quickly as you’d like with just internal resources.
Alternatively, you can go with a development agency. Not everyone can be an expert in every technology, right? So, in some cases, it makes sense to handle certain parts of your app in-house and bring in a development agency for the rest. Let's dive deeper into what development agencies offer.
Hiring a development agency for app maintenance can be a smart move, especially if you're not equipped to manage certain aspects yourself. If the agency that developed your app also offers maintenance services, that's an added advantage. Handing over this responsibility to a professional company means you can focus on other important tasks that need your attention.
For instance, if your priority is maintaining security, there are many agencies whose core expertise lies in providing regular security updates. Partnering with such companies ensures your app stays secure and up to date without you having to sweat the details.
