What you must have

Data stays in India: every option here has a Mumbai (or Indian) region, so this doesn't change the ranking. It does decide which region you deploy in.

ETL and BI Tool Choices

The warehouse is only one part of the bill. With small data, the BI licences are often the biggest line.

Protecting Your Data in Analytics

Business data usually includes customer names, phone numbers, addresses, tax IDs and payment details. Copying it into an analytics system creates a second place that must be secured.

India's DPDP Act: where things stand

  1. 13 Nov 2025DPDP Rules notified. The Data Protection Board is set up and the phased rollout begins.
  2. Nov 2026Consent manager registration rules take effect.
  3. May 2027Most obligations apply: notice and consent, security safeguards, breach notification, data principal rights, retention and erasure, and cross-border transfer rules.

This is a summary, not legal advice. Check the final rules with your legal advisor, especially for retention periods and cross-border transfers.

When Each Data Platform Is the Right Call

Self-hosted

PostgreSQL + Metabase

  • Under ~1 crore rows
  • Mostly dashboards and reports
  • Someone can look after a Linux server
  • Lowest, flat monthly cost; unlimited users

Skip for many sources, TBs of data, or strict audit needs without extra work.

AWS

S3 + Athena

  • Small to large data, spiky or light querying
  • You want nothing to keep running
  • Already on AWS
  • Files, logs and app exports in one place

Skip if dashboards query raw data constantly without summary tables; scans add up.

AWS

Redshift Serverless

  • Crores of rows, steady SQL workload
  • Committed to AWS
  • Many concurrent dashboard users
  • Want a warehouse without leaving AWS billing

Skip for tiny data: the 4 RPU minimum bills at least 60 s per query.

Snowflake

Snowflake

  • Crores to billions of rows, many sources
  • SQL analysts, many concurrent users
  • Near-zero maintenance
  • Sharing data with partners

Skip for tiny data with frequent refreshes. Each wake-up bills at least a minute.

Databricks

Databricks

  • TBs of data, streaming, files and logs
  • Machine learning and AI on your data
  • Python / Spark team
  • Complex multi-step pipelines

Skip for plain reporting on small data. Highest cost and effort here.

Google Cloudyour pick

BigQuery

  • Already on Google Workspace or GCP
  • Small data: 1 TiB queries and 10 GiB storage free each month
  • Large data with no servers to run
  • Looker Studio dashboards for free

Skip if you're deep in AWS or Azure; moving data across clouds adds cost.

Microsoft

Microsoft Fabric

  • Company runs on Microsoft 365 / Azure
  • Power BI is the standard
  • Mixed team of analysts and low-code users
  • One bill for lakehouse, pipelines and BI

Skip for small data on a tight budget; F2 capacity bills all month unless paused.

ClickHouse

ClickHouse Cloud

  • Event, log and IoT data
  • Sub-second dashboards on huge tables
  • Real-time analytics
  • Open-source engine, easy to move off

Skip if you need heavy joins across many normalised business tables.

What to Use as Your Data Grows

  1. ≤ 10 lakh rowsPostgreSQL + Metabase on one small server. BigQuery free tier if you're on Google.you are here
  2. 10 lakh – 1 croreSame setup with incremental sync and summary tables, or S3 + Athena / BigQuery.
  3. 1 – 100 croreSnowflake, BigQuery, Redshift Serverless or Fabric, matched to your cloud. Add Airbyte or Fivetran for many sources.
  4. 100 crore+ / MLDatabricks, or Snowflake / BigQuery with a separate ML stack. ClickHouse for very fast dashboards on huge event data.

Keep reports in standard SQL so moving up a step means changing the database connection, not rebuilding dashboards. Scores are a guide built on common rules of thumb, not a benchmark.

How the Warehouse Platform Picker Works

Choosing a data warehouse is rarely about raw features. The right analytics platform depends on how much data you have, how fast it grows, how many people read dashboards, which cloud you already pay for and what your team can run. This picker scores PostgreSQL + Metabase, Amazon S3 + Athena, Redshift Serverless, Snowflake, Databricks, Google BigQuery, Microsoft Fabric and ClickHouse Cloud against those inputs, then ranks them on the priorities you weight.

Every recommendation comes with a monthly cost estimate that covers the whole stack: warehouse compute, storage, the ETL tool that syncs your data and the BI tool your team uses for dashboards. For deeper, single-platform estimates, try the Snowflake cost calculator, the Databricks cost calculator or the Snowflake vs Databricks advisor.

How to Choose the Right Data Warehouse

  • Start with your data size, not the hype. Under about 1 crore rows, a single PostgreSQL server or BigQuery's free tier often beats an enterprise warehouse on both cost and simplicity.
  • Stay close to your current cloud. Redshift and Athena fit AWS, BigQuery fits Google Cloud and Fabric fits Microsoft 365. Staying in one cloud means one bill, one sign-in and no cross-cloud transfer fees.
  • Count the BI and ETL licences. With small data, per-user BI licences and usage-based ETL tools like Fivetran are often a bigger line on the bill than the warehouse itself.
  • Match the platform to your team's skills. SQL teams get productive fastest on Snowflake, BigQuery or Redshift. Databricks pays off when you have Python and Spark skills and ML or streaming workloads.
  • Check security and residency early. Row and column masking, audit logs, customer-managed keys and private networking often depend on the edition you buy, so confirm them before you commit.
Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about choosing a data warehouse or analytics platform.

For under about 1 crore (10 million) rows and mostly dashboards, a single PostgreSQL server with Metabase is usually the cheapest and simplest option. If you already use Google Workspace or GCP, BigQuery's free tier is a strong alternative. Managed warehouses like Snowflake or Redshift start paying off once data, sources or concurrent users grow.
It scores eight platforms against the priorities you weight (cost, maintenance, scale, ML readiness, simplicity, lock-in and security), then adjusts for your current cloud, team skills, workloads, data size and compliance needs. Platforms that cannot handle your data size are ruled out, and the estimated monthly cost feeds into the cost score.
They are planning estimates built from public list prices (mostly US regions, checked in October 2026) and simple usage assumptions. Mumbai and other regions are often slightly higher, and negotiated discounts, query patterns and ETL volumes can change the real bill. You can edit every unit price in the calculator to match your quote.
Pick the one that matches your cloud first. BigQuery suits Google Cloud teams and spiky querying, Redshift Serverless suits AWS-committed teams with steady SQL workloads, and Snowflake suits multi-source, multi-cloud setups with many SQL analysts and partner data sharing. The picker shows how each one ranks and costs for your specific inputs.
Choose Databricks when you have terabytes of data, streaming or file-based workloads, machine learning or AI on your data, and a team comfortable with Python or Spark. For plain reporting on small or medium data, a SQL warehouse is usually cheaper and easier to run.
Yes. Every platform in this tool offers a Mumbai or other Indian region, so data residency does not change the ranking, but it does decide where you deploy. Most DPDP Act obligations apply from May 2027; confirm retention and cross-border transfer rules with your legal advisor.
